Zelenskyy expresses hope for Ukraine, Russia, US summit | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News - NHKニュース
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope that upcoming high-level talks involving his country, Russia and the United States will pave the way for a three-way summit on ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Zelenskyy met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Tuesday. At a news conference, he referred to the three-way talks among senior officials scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday next week in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The Ukrainian president said he expects that the meeting will pave the way for a trilateral meeting at the leadership level along with Ukraine's other diplomatic steps.
He indicated that the meeting will cover security guarantees for Ukraine and an end to attacks by both sides on energy facilities and other infrastructure.
Zelenskyy also said Ukraine will work closely with European countries as it prepares for the upcoming talks.
Merz said it is important for Russia to finally engage in serious negotiations on a ceasefire and a subsequent peace agreement. He added he has not seen that happen yet.
Ahead of next week's meeting, the European Commission will hold a meeting on Wednesday with Ukraine, the US, NATO and others to discuss Ukraine's postwar reconstruction and other issues.
A meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a European-led group of countries that has pledged support for Ukraine, is also scheduled for November 19 in Berlin.
The French Defense Ministry and others said a multinational force led by the Coalition of the Willing will conduct its first large-scale exercise in Poland from November 9 through 22.
The exercise, led by France and Britain, will involve about 2,800 troops from 11 countries including Germany, Belgium, Estonia, the Netherlands and Sweden. It is aimed at testing the readiness of the multinational force, which will be established following a ceasefire.
Turkey is expected to take part only in simulated military operations.
