World of Warcraft Forever Players Can Be Kicked Out of Beta For Offensive Character Names - VICE

World of Warcraft: Forever introduces a new first and last name option for characters and players who use the new format to sneak in names that break the community rules can be kicked out of the beta entirely if they get busted.

Since the earliest days of World of Warcraft the game has been dealing with players who try to sneak offensive character or guild names into the game with creative spellings. Now that World of Warcraft: Forever has introduced a first name/last name system, a whole new realm of options are available for players who want to push the limits.

Beta testers should take note through that creating characters with names that break the community guidelines can lead to a full beta ban, rather than just a forced character rename like they may be used to on the live servers.

The player asked, “At the end of the day, it’s a beta test. Introducing a new character naming scheme requires real-world stress testing, so why ban players for showing blizz what needs to be tuned?”

“Character names must adhere to our naming policies, including in Beta. If you violate those policies that may result in the removal of beta access.“

“It isn’t a matter of “tuning”, we know what bad names are and we know people create characters with them all the time. We have a reporting option specifically to have those addressed. Some slip through the cracks here and there because they go unreported.

Having the option for a first/last name provides opportunities for a lot of… creativity, but our policies are still in place. The names themselves should continue to abide by our naming policies. The Development team for WoW: Forever is trying to address those names that are brought to their attention.

Beta is primarily run by QA and the Game Development team, so policy enforcement there primarily falls under their banner. However, if you feel an error was made you’ll want to submit an appeal. None of the examples I have seen thus far seem to be appropriate, but that isn’t my call.”

There were a ton of replies on the thread as different community members were debating if the beta ban is too harsh a punishment or if beta access is a special privilege that Blizzard has a right to take and give away as it seems appropriate.

Players should obviously always try to follow the naming policies, but it sounds especially true if they don’t want to lose their beta access over these next few weeks until the title officially launches.
