The progress of construction work on the Eenchakkal–Kazhakuttam stretch of National Highway 66 was reviewed at a meeting of elected representatives and officials here on Friday. The meeting, led by Transport Minister C.P. John, Shashi Tharoor MP and V. Muraleedharan MLA, decided to improve traffic safety and ease congestion by increasing the number of spans at the Eanchakkal crossway from five to 13, thereby widening the crossing.
It was also decided to construct as many spans as possible instead of resorting to earth-filling for the approach road. This is expected to ensure smoother access to the KSRTC depot at Eenchakkal. Construction of the National Highway in the Kazhakuttam area will resume shortly. The meeting also directed the District Collector to enlist the services of the Fire and Rescue Services to clear blockages in the drainage system along the stretch.
Furthermore, it was decided to pursue the necessary approval from the Central government for the proposed ring road project.
