Why is US military preparing for a battlefield stretching to the Moon?

The US military is preparing for a future in which a battlefield could stretch far beyond Earth, with its top military officer saying American forces must be ready to operate as far as the region around the Moon, reported Associated Press.

Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the remarks on Wednesday, September 16, at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference outside Washington. He said the military should adapt now so it "is prepared to fight, endure and win from the seabed to cislunar space."

Lt Gen Gregory Gagnon, head of the US Space Force's Combat Forces Command, said the military is preparing for this changing environment because "humanity is advancing deeper into space and the Space Force's job is to help be prepared to defend US interests."

Created in 2019, the US Space Force is the newest branch of the American military and is responsible for military operations and capabilities in space.WHY COULD MOON BECOME CRUCIAL?

That ice could eventually provide water and potentially hydrogen and oxygen for future exploration, making the region important for both science and long-term human activity in space.

The US military has also increasingly focused on the possibility that future conflicts could extend into space. According to Gagnon, US intelligence agencies believe potential adversaries are seeking to expand warfare into space.

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty, signed by both the US and China, says the Moon and other celestial bodies must be used "exclusively for peaceful purposes." It also bans placing nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in orbit around Earth.

However, the treaty does not prohibit every military-related activity in space. This leaves questions over how future military operations around the Moon would be interpreted under international law.
