Why HBO's 'Harry Potter' Music Will Sound Different - Tempo.co English
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As HBO prepares to launch its Harry Potter television reboot near Christmas 2026, composer Hans Zimmer has revealed that the series will feature a different musical identity separate from the original film soundtrack.
While early trailers showcase familiar visuals faithful to J.K. Rowling’s novels, such as Hogwarts and the Great Hall, the score itself will take a fresh direction.
Speaking in an interview with Collider, the Oscar-winning composer addressed the pressure of following iconic composer John Williams, emphasizing that he has no intention of copying Williams' established style.
"I can't write like John Williams, but even if I could, I would try to stay away as far as possible and try to be original," Zimmer told Collider.
This is not the first time Zimmer has inherited a property previously defined by Williams. In 2013, Zimmer composed the score for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, taking over a character whose iconic theme had been set by Williams in the 1978 Superman film.
Zimmer recalled spending months anxious about matching Williams' legacy. The breakthrough came during a conversation with Snyder, who offered a grounding perspective.
"Zack just said the simplest thing to me. He said, 'Hans, it was just a movie. This is just a movie.' And that was so liberating," Zimmer recalled.
He added that treating the assignment as another creative project allowed him to enjoy the process and construct a completely distinct sonic identity for Superman, an approach he is now bringing to Hogwarts.
Williams composed the scores for the first three Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2004, including "Hedwig’s Theme," which is the celesta-driven motif that became the franchise's universal signature. Even as subsequent film installments brought in new composers, including Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and Alexandre Desplat, Williams’ foundational motifs endured throughout all eight movies.
As fan outlet Mugglenet noted, aiming for an original score does not automatically mean "Hedwig’s Theme" will be discarded entirely. While Zimmer intends to avoid imitating Williams’ orchestral style, the series could still periodically weave in established musical motifs.
The broader franchise has already shown that the Wizarding World can adapt to different musical interpretations, as seen in the video game Hogwarts Legacy and the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
HBO announced in January that Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers Music alongside co-composers Kara Talve and Ane Rozman would handle the musical direction for the television adaptation. Known for his work on The Lion King, Gladiator, Inception, Interstellar, and Dune, Zimmer brings extensive experience in crafting distinct musical landscapes.
Though promotional materials have relied on recognizable visual, HBO has yet to reveal Zimmer’s score in early previews. For returning fans, the new music promises to be one of the most defining shifts in this latest adaptation.
