Rare bird rescued in critical condition to be GPS-tracked after release into Margalla Hills
Nearly a century and a half after it was last recorded here, a rare White-Tailed Eagle has made an extraordinary return to Pakistan - only to be found barely alive, with both eyes sewn shut and its body riddled with injuries.
The European-origin raptor was discovered in October 2025 during research into migratory birds visiting Pakistan from colder regions of the world. Rescued in critical condition, the eagle was found to be suffering from severe eye infections and other injuries, with bird trappers allegedly using it to lure and capture other birds.
Now undergoing rehabilitation in a controlled environment, the rare visitor is being prepared for a second chance at freedom. Once fully recovered, it is expected to be released in the Margalla Hills in December, fitted with a GPS tracker that will allow researchers to follow its movements and migration route.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, Karachi-based bird enthusiast Haroon Yousafzai said the discovery came during research into migratory birds arriving in Pakistan.
According to Yousafzai, the White-Tailed Eagle had migrated to Pakistan from Europe but was in an extremely critical condition when it was rescued. He said both of the bird's eyes had been sewn shut with thread and it was suffering from severe infections and other injuries. The bird's physical condition had significantly reduced its chances of survival, he said. Following its rescue, it was placed in an environment maintained at a controlled temperature, where it has been receiving treatment and rehabilitation.
Yousafzai said the presence of the White-Tailed Eagle in Pakistan had been recorded after almost 150 years.
The bird is expected to be released into the wild in December after making a full recovery. Yousafzai said the Margalla Hills had been selected as the release site to help the eagle return towards its natural habitat.
Before its release, the eagle will be fitted with a GPS tracker. The device will enable researchers to monitor its movements, migration routes and behaviour in the wild.
