Voter registration deadlines vary widely across the U.S., and some are only days away, while in other states, people have another month to register before the upcoming midterm elections.

The midterms are November 3 this year. While still more than a month away, some people have only days to register to vote if they haven't already, depending on the state they live in. Voter registration rules vary widely by state, with some requiring people to complete registration in person, while in others it can be done online.

Since states—not the federal government—run their elections, the dates and deadlines differ across the country. In some states, people can register up until Election Day. In others, the process must be completed around a month in advance.

Nationally, all 435 House of Representatives are up for election this year, as well as 33 Senate seats and 39 governorships.

The voter registration deadlines and the website at which voters can register for every state are listed below.

Registration must be done on paper. They can request a form or learn more here.

Note: If there are fewer than 15 days until the election, voters must complete a Same-Day Voter Registration process and request their ballot in person.

Note: If registration occurs fewer than eight days before Election Day, people must register in person.

Note: If the application is submitted on or after October 19, it won't take effect until after the November election, so at that point voters must register in person or through Same-Day Voter Registration.

Registration can be completed here.

Note: The paper voter registration deadline is October 26. If this deadline is missed, same-day voter registration is available at voter service centers.

Note: The online registration is available until up to 11 days before the election.

Note: Online registration closes 27 days before the election, and in order to register, voters must do so at the office of the election authority.

Note: Online registration must be completed 15 days before the election.

Note: The deadline for registering in person or by mail is October 5, but the online registration deadline is October 13.

Note: In-person registration can be done at the polls on Election Day. However, the deadline for mail and online submissions is October 14.

Note: Voter registration forms completed in-person are valid on the day that they are signed in person, but mail and online submissions must be done by October 24.

Note: Within 14 days of the election, registration must be done in person at the clerk's office.

Note: On Election Day, voter registration must be completed at the polling place before voting.

Note: Regular registration closes October 5, but voters can still register on Election Day at the polls.

Note: Mail-in registrations must be mailed before October 16. Voters can register in person through October 23.

Note: Mailed registrations must be done by October 6, while online registrations must be submitted by October 29. In-person registrations are available on Election Day.

Note: If it's six to 13 days before the election, registration can be completed at the local town or city clerk’s office. Registration can also occur at the polling place on Election Day.

Note: Voter registration closes October 6, but will open again for in-person applicants on Election Day.

North Dakota does not require voter registration. Voters who are at least 18 years old and have lived in North Dakota for 30 days can vote. However, they must have a valid form of identification to vote.

Note: In-person registration is allowed during voting, but the deadline for mail-in and online registration is October 23.

Note: Online registration can be done through the Friday before Election Day.

Note: If registration is not completed 11 days before the election, voters can register through Election Day and vote with a provisional ballot.

Note: Online and mail-in registrations must be received by October 26. After that, registration can be completed in person.

Note: Online and mail-in registration must be complete by October 14. Voters can register at their polling place on Election Day.

Note: Registration closes two weeks before Election Day but voters can register in-person when they vote.

Generally, people must be a U.S. citizen, meet their state's residency requirements, be at least 18 years of age, and not be disqualified under state laws in order to register to vote.

In many cases, online registration, mail-in forms or in-person applications are available. The methods differ per state. Usually, an applicant must provide their full legal name, address, date of birth, driver's license or other form of identification, and a signature.

The below map, created by Newsweek, shows how widely voter registration deadlines vary across the U.S.

Democrats have cut into Republicans' voter registration advantage in several states with competitive Senate races, though the GOP retains advantages in some of the conservative states that appear increasingly competitive.

Democrats have narrowed the gap in voter registration in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and New Hampshire, though Republicans hold advantages in each. Republicans have made registration gains in Maine and North Carolina.

Democrats are hopeful that they can expand the electoral battleground due largely to President Trump’s approval rating falling to new lows amid frustrations with the economy, cost of living and soaring gas prices amid the Iran war.

Control of both chambers of Congress is at stake, with Republicans holding a 53-47 majority in the Senate, so Democrats need to flip four seats to win a majority.

Voters should check their specific state guidelines on registration and any deadlines that are in place. For states that allow registration up until November 3, sometimes a special application, such as a Same-Day Registration, must be completed. Voters might be required to register in person as opposed to online.

In addition to varying registration deadlines, different states also have different rules around early voting. In some cases, early voting can occur as much as 40 days before Election Day.
