What Jon Sumrall said immediately after Florida beat Ole Miss - Gators Wire
The Jon Sumrall era is off to a stellar start after the Florida Gators prevailed in the Swamp against the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday afternoon, 52-28. For the first time in a long while, the Orange and Blue looked like the program it once was during its heyday under Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.
Florida finished with 498 total yards of offense with eight total scores while limiting Trinidad Chambliss and the Rebels to a trio of touchdowns and field goals en route to the 24-point triumph. The UF special teams unit was also special, gaining a total of 264 return yards on six chances and flawlessly scoring 10 points on field goals and extra points.
Immediately after the final second ticked off the clock, ABC's sideline reporter Katie George spoke with Sumrall about what had transpired inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium that day. Here are the questions and answers from that sideline chat.
At the start of this week, you were surprised to be a 3.5-point favorite. Your team goes and does that: a 24-point victory. What makes you most proud of this performance?
"Just their belief, their buy-in. We're still not a finished product. But the guys are giving great effort, and they're trying to do what we ask of them. We still didn't play our best tonight."
As a former linebacker, do you think you have a chance against your two backs tonight?
"I wouldn't have had a chance. No way. Not a chance."
You said you didn't have a five-year plan; you had a five-month plan. Why are you so sure Florida can do it right now?
"We've got a five-year plan, too. We came here to win championships. There's no reason not to expect a championship at the University of Florida. I don't see any reason why we would wait. We've got a lot of good players. A lot of good guys chose to stay, and I'm not real patient."
This program has waited a long time for moments like this. How does it feel to bring it to them?
"It's got very little to do with me. I've got an unbelievable staff, great support staff, players who (want to) win, good players to coach β I just happen to be the head coach here."
