West Indies suffer major blow. Star batter ruled out of 2nd ODI due to injury

West Indies opener Justin Greaves, who struck a sensational hundred against India in the 1st ODI at Thiruvananthapuram, has been ruled out of the 2nd ODI due to a calf injury.

Greaves dominated the proceedings against India in the opening match of the series, taking on the fast bowlers and giving the West Indies a terrific start alongside John Campbell. The batter, however, struggled with an injury through much of his 108-ball stay. In the first 10 overs of the match, he pulled his calf and needed treatment from the physio.

"Justin Greaves has been ruled out of the second game of the ODI series against India after sustaining a calf injury," Cricket West Indies said in a statement.

"Greaves picked up the injury during his innings in the opening match of the series," it added.

The hot and humid weather in Kerala made life difficult for the fast bowlers, while Greaves also struggled to maintain his intensity throughout his innings.

Greaves was eventually dismissed after completing his century in the 36th over, by none other than Kuldeep Yadav, who helped India fight their way back into the game. Kuldeep's 4/40 helped India recover from a difficult start and restrict the visitors to 295 for 7.

In reply, India dominated the chase, courtesy of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, who added 151 runs between them. Gill anchored the innings, while Kohli went on a blistering run, helping India chase down the target in just 41.4 overs.

The second ODI of the three-match series will be played in Guwahati on September 30.- Ends
