Wadiyars’ Dasara: Golden throne installation on Oct. 5, Khas Durbar on Oct. 11

The golden throne at the Mysuru Palace will be installed on October 5, ahead of the traditional Dasara celebrations of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family, while the Khas Durbar (private durbar) will be held by royal family scion and Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on October 11.

Announcing the schedule of palace rituals at a press conference on Monday, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar said the installation of the imperial golden throne would be held between 10 a.m. and 10.20 a.m., following the customary rituals.

The assembly of the throne in the palace durbar hall is an important ceremony conducted under the guidance of Ms. Wadiyar.

The Khas Durbar, coinciding with the commencement of Navarathri festivities, will begin at 11.45 a.m. on October 11, following pujas scheduled to commence at around 6 a.m.

The private durbar, a tradition dating back to the era of the Mysuru Wadiyars, is now largely representative in nature and is conducted only during Dasara. Access is restricted to a select audience. The tradition evokes the ceremonial practices of the erstwhile royal household while retaining its place in the palace’s annual Dasara observances.

The Khas Durbar will be held on the remaining days of the festivities in the evening as part of the traditional rituals.

Saraswathi Puja will be celebrated on October 16 at around 10.20 a.m., while Ayudha Puja at the Kalyana Mantapa inside the palace is scheduled for October 20 at 11.35 a.m., according to Ms. Wadiyar.

The royal family’s Vijayadashami celebrations, which conclude the Navarathri rituals, will be held on October 21, beginning at 8.15 a.m. Vajra Musti Kalaga, one of the highlights of the celebrations, will be held in the palace courtyard, followed by other traditional rituals and a procession within the palace premises.

The Mysuru Wadiyars have been observing Navarathri rituals for centuries, with the palace celebrations continuing to be an important part of the Dasara tradition.
