MANILA, Philippines – Victoria Bossong turned in a slower time in the final but still salvaged an athletics medal for the Philippines in the 2026 Asian Games as she snagged the bronze in the women’s 800m at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Japan on Tuesday, September 29.

The Filipina-American middle-distance specialist clocked 2 minutes and 5.34 seconds to finish third and deliver the Philippines’ second athletics medal in this edition of the quadrennial showpiece after John Cabang Tolentino bagged bronze in the men’s 110m hurdles.

China’s Wu Hongjiao struck gold with 2:04.49, while Bahrain’s Nelly Korir clinched silver with 2:05.16 — the three medalists separated only by less than a second. 

Bossong, whose mother, Catalina Atienza, hails from Oriental Mindoro, emerged as the title favorite after posting the fastest time in the heats, where she registered 2:02.34.

A repeat of that time would have netted the 23-year-old Harvard University graduate the Philippines’ first Asian Games gold medal in a track event since the late Lydia de Vega ruled the women’s 100m in the 1986 edition.

But it simply was not meant to be for Bossong, who owns a personal best of 1:58.52 — a time that eclipses the Asian Games record of 1:59.02 set by Kazakhstan’s Margarita Mukasheva in 2014.

Still, Bossong enjoyed a promising debut for the Philippines in a multi-sport event, which came just months after she gained eligibility in July to represent the country. – Rappler.com
