US automakers push for ban on Chinese vehicle imports - Semafor
Major automakers urged US lawmakers to ban Chinese vehicle imports after midterm elections, as Beijing’s car companies rapidly expand in international markets.
A US industry representative cited Europe — which has blamed China’s industrial overcapacity for costing European auto sector jobs — as a cautionary tale.
BYD, China’s largest automaker, reported higher sales for a sixth straight month powered by exports, while Geely’s overseas sales more than doubled, helping it eke out 1% delivery growth overall, as domestic demand evaporates.
While Beijing previously consolidated its steel and aluminum sectors, it has few incentives to do the same with vehicles, an expert told The Wall Street Journal: “Car factories employ so many people and are so deeply embedded in local economies.”
