The coming together of the peoples of the world in a harmonious relationship is the most crucial need of our time.

Preserving our cultural identities should be an expression of unity in diversity, enriching our communities, rather than becoming a source of division within our communities and among nations.

Scientific and technological advances of our times have brought about much greater degrees of interaction and interdependence among the peoples and nations of the world. Our central task, from a Bahá’í perspective, is to build a global society that reflects the fundamental oneness of humanity.

The Bahá'í Writings state: “Unification of the whole of mankind is the hall-mark of the stage which human society is now approaching. Unity of family, of tribe, of city-state, and nation have been successively attempted and fully established. World unity is the goal towards which a harassed humanity is striving”.

Unity, however, does not mean uniformity. The natural diversity of human temperament and talents, as well as humanity's varied and rich variety of cultures, experiences, and viewpoints contribute to the progress and well-being of the whole human family.

The Baha'i Writings describe this principle: “The diversity in the human family should be the cause of love and harmony, as it is in music where many different notes blend together in the making of a perfect chord”.

Embracing the concept of unity in diversity calls for the development a global consciousness and genuine love for all of humanity. We need to recognize that, the well-being of each individual and community is connected to the well-being of the whole. And that the advantage of one part of the world is best served by promoting the well-being of the entire human family.

The Bahá'í International Community emphasizes that, “Unity in diversity stands in contrast to uniformity. It cherishes the natural diversity of temperament and talents among individuals as well as humanity's variegated experiences, cultures and viewpoints, inasmuch as they contribute to the human family's progress and well-being. Much like the role played by the gene pool in the biological life of humankind and its environment, the immense wealth of cultural diversity achieved over thousands of years is vital to the development of the human race which is experiencing its collective coming-of-age. It represents a heritage that enriches us all and that must be permitted to bear its fruit in a global civilization”.

Only by the recognition of the oneness of the human family can we overcome racial, ethnic, national, religious, or other prejudices that are currently the cause of division and wars. While tolerance is an impotent step towards peaceful coexistence, it is not sufficient for eliminating deeply rooted prejudices.

The Bahá'í concept of the oneness of humanity goes beyond mere tolerance, and advocates a change in attitudes. It requires that an active effort be made towards establishing genuine unity among the races, nations, religions, and ethnic groups.

Overcoming our various prejudices, and accepting the oneness of humanity, requires a profound change of heart and a new mind-set. It is the power of the Word of God that can produce such a necessary change – and remembering that, as the Bahá’í Writings state:  “The Creator of all is One God. From this same God all creation sprang into existence, and He is the one goal, towards which everything in nature yearns”.
