Tygerberg Hospital is celebrating 50 years of serving Capetonians as the Western Cape Government looks to expand the public centre to meet the growing healthcare needs of city residents.

Since the hospital opened its doors in 1976, its staff has provided specialised public healthcare in the Western Cape.

The hospital has remained a tertiary referral hospital, as it forms an integral part of South Africa’s public healthcare system, ensuring that patients with complex medical conditions have access to the specialist services they need.

It has also been on the forefront of training SA’s doctors, as the site of Stellenbosch University’s medical faculty.

Over the past 50 years, Tygerberg has achieved a number of firsts in medical history.

Those include South Africa's first test-tube quadruplets in 1986, the country's first pregnancy following intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in 1996, significant advances in cochlear implantation and transplant medicine, and the world's first successful penile transplant in 2014.

These milestones reflect sustained progress across reproductive medicine, neonatal care, child health, adult medicine, oncology, diagnostic imaging, and other specialised services.  At the heart of these advances is a commitment to improving patients’ lives through specialised care.

According to Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness Minister Mireille Wenger, plans are in place to expand the hospital.

Wenger said these planned improvements aim to support patients, staff and students, while strengthening the hospital’s role as a major centre for treatment, teaching and research.

A statement of intent signed on 16 September 2026 by the Infrastructure Finance and Implementation Support Agency (IFISA), the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands confirmed cooperation on the proposed project.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Matodzi Mukosi said the 50th anniversary is a celebration of the people who have made Tygerberg Hospital what it is today.

“For 50 years, Tygerberg Hospital has cared for millions of people across the Western Cape and beyond.

“This milestone belongs to every patient who placed their trust in us, every member of staff who served with compassion, every student who came here to learn, and every partner who has helped strengthen healthcare in our province.

“Together, they have shaped an institution that continues to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.”
