Two men killed in mob attack in Siliguri over suspicion of cattle theft

Two men were killed and three others injured in West Bengal's Siliguri after a mob attacked them over suspicion of cattle theft on Sunday (October 4, 2026).

According to the police, around 3 a.m., a group of locals in Siliguri's Tarabari area intercepted a pick-up van and dragged the five passengers out. When they ran, the locals started chasing them, and got hold of four of them at the Dhimal Basti area. They brutally assaulted them leading to one dying on the spot. The rest were severely injured.

The mob also set their van ablaze during the altercation.

Another person from the group managed to escape and reached the Bagdogra police station. Soon the police reached the spot and rushed the victims to a hospital where another person died.

The two deceased were identified as the driver of the pick-up van Md. Shahid Akhtar, 45, a resident of Bengal's Chopra, and his associate Sajjad Mohammed, 28, from Haryana.

The Bagdogra police said that following a complaint from Mr. Akhtar's wife, a first information report was filed against unidentified people under charges of murder by mob, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and mischief causing property damage.
