Two arrested over killing of inspector in Imo commissioner’s residence - Punch Newspapers
The Imo State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of an Inspector, Henry Effiong, who was attached as a security aide to the state Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Chief Rex Anunobi. The command also said it had launched a manhunt for other suspects allegedly linked to the killing. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday. Effiong was found dead at the commissioner’s residence in Owerri on Monday, shortly after the incident was reported. A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the inspector was beheaded by his assailants and that his service rifle was taken away. Describing the incident as alarming, the source said, “The beheading of a police inspector at the residence of a serving commissioner in Imo State and the taking away of his service rifle call for serious concern. “This should not be taken for granted. The person who is now at large should be arrested immediately. He has a lot to offer in unearthing the motive behind this dastardly act.” According to the police spokesperson, 31-year-old Olivia Patrick and 25-year-old ThankGod Maurice, both males, were arrested at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Okoye said the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Audu Garba Bosso, had directed a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and bring those responsible to justice. Bosso described the killing as a “painful reminder of the risks and sacrifices police officers face in the discharge of their duties” and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased inspector. The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department, alongside the Divisional Police Officer, New Owerri Division, visited the scene, where necessary examinations were conducted and relevant exhibits recovered and secured. The remains of the deceased inspector were subsequently deposited at a mortuary. The case has since been transferred to the SCID for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects allegedly at large. Bosso assured the deceased officer’s family that the command remained committed to ensuring that justice was served. He also said the situation was under control and that appropriate security measures were in place to safeguard lives and property across the state.
