US President Donald Trump has indicated that his administration will soon make a decision on whether to carry out further attacks on Iran.

Speaking to reporters about Iran at the White House on Thursday, Trump said, "Now we'll make a decision: do we want to go further?"

He added: "I would rather not destroy the rest of the country if possible, but maybe I'll have to. You'll know soon enough."

Trump has acknowledged that the military operation against Iran was a factor behind the Republican Party's crushing defeat in the midterm elections.

The Democrats will gain control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the new Congress that begins in January. They say they will use their power over spending and other congressional authorities to pressure Trump into ending the Iran war.

Asked how he plans to use executive orders in the next two years, Trump said: "We're going to do a lot of things. You'll be seeing a lot of things over the next week, two weeks."
