Three survive Morningstar Airfield crash - IOL

THREE men are lucky to be alive after a plane crash at Morningstar Airfield, north of Cape Town, on Tuesday morning.

According to Sean Curran, a committee, a pilot and two pals went for a pleasure flight at 9.30 am. 

But the Piper Cherokee aircraft ran into trouble soon after takeoff, and the plane crashed shortly after. 

All three survived the wreck and suffered minor injuries. According to Curran, firefighters were the first emergency service workers to arrive on the scene.

He said that the pilot suffered only a minor cut on his head, while the passengers got “a little bang on the head”.

Of the injuries, Curran told IOL Media: “The pilot was fine. Nothing wrong with him. They’ve all gone to the hospital just for checkups. And there's a minor cut to the head for the pilot and two passengers that each had a little bang on the head.

“They were going for a pleasure flight. It wasn't a training incident or anything like that.”

Curran, a director and chief engineer at Sideslip Aviation Worx, said that details of the crash have been sent to the Civil Aviation Authority and that an investigation is underway. 

Curran says: “It's still under investigation. We’ve checked with the Civil Aviation Authority at this point because there were really only minor injuries,

“We are going to make attempts to move the aircraft and get it into a safe place so that we can undergo further investigation. And so at this point, we can't ascertain the cause of the accident, but it was just after takeoff. 

“Fortunately, we should have some good eyewitnesses.”
