HELSINKI, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Sweden announced Thursday that it would reintroduce internal border controls within the Schengen Area for six months starting Nov. 12, citing "a serious threat to public order and internal security."

In a statement, the Swedish government said its decision was based on an assessment of the deteriorating security situation resulting from the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The new border controls will remain in place until May 11, 2027.

The government said reintroducing internal border controls was one of the measures necessary to address serious threats to Sweden's internal security, helping authorities identify incoming travelers who could pose risks to public order and internal security.

Swedish police will determine where and how the checks are conducted and adjust the measures according to what is necessary to safeguard public order and internal security.

The government said the decision was made in accordance with European Union law.

During the previous six-month period, Sweden conducted spot checks and surveillance at its internal Schengen borders, rather than systematically checking all travelers. ■
