Stones thrown at mosque in Karnataka town during Ganesh immersion procession

Tension gripped Karnataka’s Bhatkal town on Wednesday after unidentified persons threw stones at a mosque during a Ganesh immersion procession, damaging the building's window panes, police said.

The incident took place when the procession, which started from Taland, was passing through the Ismail Sunni Jamia Masjid and the adjoining Tajus Sunnah Arabic Madrasa on its premises. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stone-throwing and efforts are underway to identify those responsible.

A complaint has been registered at the Bhatkal Town Police Station by 67-year-old Abdul Alim and Shahul Amin Gawai, saying that the window panes of the mosque and madrasa were damaged after stones were thrown at the building.

Muslim community members staged a protest outside the police station, demanding the arrest of those responsible for the incident.

Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Deepan visited Bhatkal and said police had reached the spot and would take immediate action against those responsible.

“A complaint has already been registered regarding the incident. We will take immediate action on it. Police personnel have already reached the spot. We will definitely take action in this matter,” Deepan said.

The SP urged people gathered at the spot to disperse and allow the police to investigate the incident.

“Whoever has committed any wrongdoing, we will certainly take action against them. All we are asking is that you allow us to do our work,” he said.
