SRK, Alia, KJo pay last respects to Rani Mukerji's mother Krishna

Actors Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt, along with filmmaker Karan Johar, were among those who attended the last rites of Rani Mukerji’s mother, Krishna Mukerji, in Mumbai on Tuesday. Krishna Mukerji died at the age of 75. Industry peers, including Anil Kapoor, Kabir Khan, and Farhan Akhtar, gathered to pay their final respects and offer condolences to the family.

Director Ayan Mukerji was present to support his cousin Rani Mukerji during the last rites. Director-producer Ashutosh Gowariker and actor Vaani Kapoor were also among those who arrived to offer their condolences.

The cause of death has not been disclosed by the family. Krishna Mukerji was married to the late filmmaker and Filmalaya Studios co-founder Ram Mukerji, who died in 2017. She is survived by her children, actor Rani Mukerji and producer Raja Mukerji.

Earlier, Yash Raj Films confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday, September 22. The statement read, “With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji's mother, Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, died this afternoon. The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support, and respectfully requests privacy during this time of immense grief.”

Krishna Mukerji was a playback singer, best known for lending her voice to the song Id Ke Din Gale Mil Le Raja from the 1982 film Teesri Aankh. She was married to filmmaker Ram Mukerji. He was one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios, Mumbai. He is most known for his films, Hum Hindustani (1960) and Leader (1964), featuring actors Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala.

Although Krishna Mukerji had pushed her daughter toward a career in cinema, Rani’s first screen test for her debut film, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1996), left her mother unconvinced of her potential.

Recalling the incident in a 2025 interaction with ANI, Rani said, “So for my mother, it was like you do it and see how it goes. Though after my first screen test, she found me so bad that she told the producer 'I think you'll ruin your film by taking my daughter. You'll go through losses. Better you don't take her'. Because the producer was very keen to sign me, Salim uncle (Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat producer)....But my mom was smart enough to understand that I was not doing a good job. So she was like, 'I don't think you should take her'."

Following her debut, Rani established herself as one of Hindi cinema’s leading figures through major commercial successes such as Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. She later delivered a career-defining performance as a deaf-blind woman in director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's acclaimed 2005 film Black, widely regarded as a benchmark in Indian dramatic acting.
