Spangdahlem: Military aircraft crashes near US air base

The Spangdahlem Air Base is located in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Local authorities said that first responders were helping at the scene but that they could only comment in a limited capacity.

Local authorities in the remote Eifel region initially said one person was injured.

"No comments can be made on the further details of the event from the side of the Eifel district at this time," the Eifel district of Birburg-Prüm said. It said that firefighters and emergency responders were at the scene.

German news agency DPA reported soon after the news broke that the US Air Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Spangdahlem is a US base located north of Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate, not far west of the border to Luxembourg. The NATO facility was constructed in the early 1950s, the US Air Force's 52nd Fighter Wing is garrisoned there.
