Sounds AI-generated: Why even Swifties aren't sold on Taylor Swift's Patient Zero
Taylor Swift fans have spent years dissecting her songs, defending her choices and finding something to love in almost every release. Patient Zero, however, appears to be testing that loyalty. While the song has opened strongly commercially, some longtime Swifties are calling it one of her weakest tracks yet.
Released on September 25 as the lead track from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, Patient Zero arrived with four new songs added to Swift's 2025 album. It debuted with 13.7 million Spotify streams globally, the second-biggest debut for a new song this year at the time, according to Hits Daily Double.
But the conversation among fans has been noticeably less celebratory. On Reddit's r/swifties, one listener who said they had loved Swift's music since the age of seven wrote: "For the first time ever I have found a TS track that I dislike MORE every time I hear it." Another said the chorus felt "really boring or forced melodically", adding that it "sounds ai generated" to them β while stressing that they knew it wasn't. The bridge is emerging as the biggest sticking point. "Without the bridge the song itself isn't terrible but I canβt listen to this bridge at all so itβs a skip for me," one fan wrote. Another joked that Pink Clouding should have been the single, calling Swift's choice a tradition of "picking the worst first single". Some fans simply went back to older favourites such as Speak Now, Midnights and Red after listening to the new tracks.
The criticism isn't limited to Reddit. The Independent described the four-track expansion as "one diamond and three duds", calling Patient Zero difficult even for "the most zealous Swifties" and singling out its bridge as a major problem.Tay Director's latest music video just burst into our life like fireworks. The song's premise is a conversation between Swift and her ex's new girlfriend, with Swift warning her about his behaviour. The title refers to Swift being the first woman to experience his pattern. Directed by Swift, the video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell and turns the song into a gothic ghost story, with Swift playing Farrell's former lover. The video premiered at the MTV VMAs on September 27.
So while Patient Zero is hardly a commercial failure, the reaction around it is unusually interesting: the numbers are huge, but some of the people who know Swift's catalogue best are simply not feeling the song.- EndsRead more | Taylor Swift goes gothic with Patient Zero starring Dakota Johnson
