Sophie Cunningham clears air after Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell debate infuriates fans - USA Today
When Sophie Cunningham and longtime trainer Drew Hanlen kicked off their No Hesitation Show, it was focused on discussions around basketball. And it's safe to say that since the show's start, that's been the case. For example, Cunningham and Hanlen equally heaped praise on Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell, who's cemented herself in the MVP conversation.
Cunningham went so far as to say that opponents "literally cannot stop Kelsey" and that there's "no one in our league who can stop Kelsey." And in all honesty, she's probably not wrong. Regardless, the high praise for Mitchell as an MVP candidate is warranted, but it didn't stop some fans from pushing back heavily because her other star teammate, Caitlin Clark, was at the center of the discussion.
After this transpired, Cunningham cleared the air on an episode of the No Hesitation Show, clearly stating that the case for both players is undeniable, and they hyped both players up. For good measure, even Hanlen admitted that he was blown away by the messages he received about people being angry for Cunningham "propping up" Mitchell.
"I just think it's crazy because I have two great, great players on my team, and I'm gonna hype both of them up," Cunningham said. "I could make an argument that Kelsey should be MVP. I could make a big argument that CC should be MVP, and we totally hype both of them up. You know how the internet works. They just wanted to clip whatever."
Cunningham added that it gives a little taste of "what the WNBA media is like" in how they show love to both players, but noted that Mitchell was the clip that made the rounds on social media.
Regardless, Cunningham isn't wrong that there's a legitimate case for both Mitchell and Clark to be in MVP consideration. Both players have been exceptional this season for the Fever, and considering Mitchell broke A'ja Wilson's record for most consecutive 20-point scoring games with 21 (and still counting), it's hard not to appreciate the season she's had.
