Second crane topples onto Florida home while trying to remove first fallen crane

A second crane has toppled onto a home in Florida while fire crews tried to use it to remove a first fallen crane.

Firefighters raced to the Fort Lauderdale home at around 9:15 a.m. ET Thursday after a crane attached to a truck fell onto the roof.

“The house that the crane fell onto sustained significant structural damage,” Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Frank Guzman told The Independent.

Video taken by fire crews shows the crane’s weight lifting the truck off the road with only the front passenger tire remaining on the ground. The crane sat on the Spanish tile roof of the home’s garage.

Crews brought in another truck-mounted crane to lift the first crane out, but its beam collapsed onto the home from the weight it was carrying, Guzman told the Miami Herald.

No one was injured during the incident. A neighbor said the homeowner had been remodeling it.

“It’s a shame that I saw this happen. This is a new friend of mine; he just moved into the neighborhood, and he’s been renovating the house,” the neighbor named Mike told news outlet WSVN.

“My heart goes out to him right now, and his family, because they were just so excited to move into this house, and now they have to deal with this tragedy just because somebody wasn’t really paying attention and doing what they needed to do.”

It’s unclear what caused the first crane to collapse. A fire inspector and the city’s building department were called to assess the damage.

A crane collapsed on two homes in River Vale, New Jersey, last Thursday after the ground beneath a tree company truck that the crane was attached to gave way, according to reports.

"It split the garage, it went right through the top and split down, so I called 911 and they said get out of the house," Dina DeMayo, the owner of one of the homes that was damaged, told news outlet WABC.

No one was injured in the incident.
