SCR steps up drinking water monitoring across stations, colonies

South Central Railway (SCR) has strengthened its water quality monitoring system across railway stations and residential colonies to ensure the availability of safe drinking water for passengers and railway employees. Most water samples collected and tested between September 9 and 15 were found to be ‘satisfactory’.

It claimed that the enhanced monitoring mechanism includes daily checks of water quality and residual chlorine levels, along with regular bacteriological testing to detect Escherichia coli (E. coli) contamination as per prescribed procedures.

A total of 188 routine water samples were collected from Hyderabad Railway Station and nearby railway colonies. These samples were tested for residual chlorine levels and screened for the presence of E. coli bacteria. None of the samples tested during the period was found unfit for consumption. The tests also did not detect any E. coli-positive samples, indicating that water supplied at the locations met the prescribed safety standards, said a press release.
