The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) said that it's in the process of hiring new employees to address staff shortages nationwide.

SASSA CEO Themba Matlou briefed the media in Cape Town on Friday where the grant agency also marked its 20th anniversary, having been established in 2006.

Matlou said a recent policy pronouncement by the Department of Public Service and Administration, responsible for early retirement and voluntary exit options for public servants, has also contributed to the staff shortages.

“A number of our officials have left the system, and some are leaving the system. We have developed an intervention plan of what we call replacement of all those officials that have left.”

He, however, said the agency is in the process of addressing the concern.

“We have agreed with the executives that within 16 days, we need to have filled most of those positions that our officials have left. In the meantime, we have worked on the contract capacitation of offices. In total, nationally, we have appointed about 1,000. We wanted to augment to deal with the capacity of the long-term settlement.”
