Two-year-old Peyton Wahl remains in hospital after suffering burns to more than 20% of his body when he fell into a bathtub filled with hot water.
The Gauteng Department of Health has rejected claims that the family of two-year-old Peyton Wahl, who suffered severe burns after falling into a bathtub filled with hot water, is facing a medical bill of about R698,030.
Peyton, from Kempton Park in Ekurhuleni, reportedly suffered burns covering more than 20% of his body after falling into a bathtub filled with hot water late in August.
He was initially admitted to ARWYP Hospital, where he received emergency treatment, before being transferred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital for further care.
Peyton remains in hospital as he continues to recover from his injuries.
His recovery has been complicated by an infection and fever, while his family has also raised concerns about access to the pain medication he requires.
According to a crowdfunding campaign launched on BackaBuddy, the family’s medical expenses initially stood at about R200,000.
The estimated costs later increased to approximately R698,030.
The campaign, which has a target of R698,030, has so far raised R709,041, including R247,200 in offline donations.
The campaign says Peyton is facing a lengthy hospital stay and recovery because of the extent of his injuries and the complications that have developed.
“Unfortunately, he has now developed an infection and a fever, adding another serious challenge to his recovery.
“His little body is fighting so hard, and it is heartbreaking to know how much pain he is experiencing,” the campaign states.
“With the extent of his injuries, the infection and complications he is facing, as well as the lengthy hospital treatment and recovery ahead, these costs may continue to increase.”
The family is reportedly appealing for financial assistance to help with the expenses associated with Peyton’s treatment and recovery.
The Gauteng Department of Health has rejected claims that the family of 2-year-old Peyton Wahl is facing a R698,030 medical bill after he suffered severe burns when he fell into a bathtub filled with hot water.
However, the Gauteng Department of Health has disputed reports about the alleged medical bill and Peyton’s classification as a patient.
Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that Peyton is currently receiving treatment at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
“The department wishes to clarify that the reports regarding the patient’s classification and alleged medical bill are incorrect,” Mabona said.
He said Peyton was classified under the hospital group (HG) category.
“Accordingly, children under the age of 6 years are exempted from payment for hospital services, subject to the applicable provisions and regulations,” Mabona said.
He added that the family was therefore not liable for the medical bill.
Mabona also said the hospital had not initiated or requested any public fundraising campaign to cover Peyton’s medical treatment.
“The Gauteng Department of Health remains committed to providing quality healthcare in accordance with applicable legislation, policies and public healthcare regulations, while protecting the privacy and dignity of all patients,” he said.
“We appeal to the media and members of the public to verify information with the department before publishing or sharing reports that may cause unnecessary concern or confusion.”
Meanwhile, Peyton remains at Steve Biko Academic Hospital while receiving treatment for the severe burns he suffered in the incident.
