Fredericton police said earlier that they responded to a disturbance outside a home on Murray Avenue at about 11:15 p.m. on Sunday.
When officers arrived, they found a man had barricaded himself inside the home with a weapon, a release from police said.
The Serious Incident Response Team, or SIRT, said Wednesday that it immediately received a referral about the incident from the Fredericton Police Force.
A release from the oversight agency included a couple of details about developments that night at the Murray Avenue address, but little information has been shared with the public.
SIRT said the Fredericton Police Force emergency response team and crisis negotiators were at the scene for two hours, trying to communicate with the man.
Then the residence caught fire, SIRT said.
The man was located dead inside the house, it said.
Neither Fredericton police nor SIRT confirmed how the man died, how the residence caught fire or what weapon the man had.
SIRT said its investigation is still in the early stages, so it is unable to provide additional details.
SIRT investigates incidents of death, serious injury, sexual assault or intimate partner violence that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia.
