Facebook’s decision to block the page of independent Malayalam digital media outlet NOCAP is the latest instance of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s attempts to suppress freedom of expression, Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan has said.
Neither Meta, the parent company of Facebook, nor the government has explained the reason for the decision, Mr. Vijayan alleged in a social media post. This move reflects the intolerance of the government towards criticism and press freedom, the Opposition leader added.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and the UDF government practises the same persecution of the media that is carried out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Sangh Parivar, he alleged.
The URL of NOCAP’s page says, “Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content.”
