PH sepak takraw secures one bronze, will play for gold at Asian Games - GMA Network

The Philippines is assured of two more medals in the 2026 Asian Games after the sepak takraw team delivered a bronze medal in one event and advanced to the finals in another to hike the country's medal tally on Monday.

The women's double team is now assured of at least a silver medal after sweeping Laos, 15-12, 15-10, in their semifinals bout earlier today to advance to the finals against Vietnam.

The women's team finished the group stage with a stellar 2-1 record, beating host Japan and India and bowing South Korea in the final preliminary game. Its record, though, was enough to finish second in Group A and book a semifinals berth.

There the PH team, bannered by striker Jean Marie Sucalit, feeder Abegail Sinogbuhan, and substitute Nelly Jay Salon, dominated Laos to get a shot at a gold medal.

Their gold medal bout against Vietnam is set on Tuesday at 8 a.m.

Meanwhile, the men's team captured a bronze after falling to Malaysia in the men's regu semifinals later in the day, 15-10, 11-15, 7-15.

The men's team won the opening frame with Jason Huerte sealing the deal, but the Filipinos wasted an early lead in Set 2 after the Malaysians unleashed an 11-6 run before Muhammad Mohd Razali's ace and a Philippine error allowed Malaysia to even the affair to one set apiece.

The Filipinos then fell behind early in Set 3, 1-5, before Malaysia stretched it to a 10-4 cushion. Back-to-back errors from the Philippines saw Malaysia at match point, 14-6, before another infraction sealed it for the Malaysians, who will face Thailand in the finals.

The Philippine men's regu team is composed of Huerte, Jom Rafael, Reynaldo Asilum, Glindel Phori, and Ronsited Gabayeron.
