PDP senatorial candidate promises jobs, empowerment for Anambra South - Punch Newspapers

The Peoples Democratic Party senatorial candidate for Anambra South in the 2027 general election, Prince Samben Nwosu, has pledged to prioritise job creation, sustainable empowerment and grassroots development if elected. Nwosu, a former organising secretary of the PDP and former Federal Commissioner at the Public Complaints Commission, made the pledge during an interaction with journalists at his country home in Nnewi on Tuesday. He said his proposed representation would adopt a community-based approach to address the socio-economic challenges facing residents of the seven local government areas that make up the senatorial district. Anambra South comprises Aguata, Ihiala, Ekwusigo, Orumba North, Orumba South, Nnewi North and Nnewi South Local Government Areas. Nwosu said he was seeking election to the Senate to provide what he described as quality representation rather than to pursue personal wealth. “I am contesting to attract quality representation to the good people of Anambra South constituency. I am going to the Red Chambers of the National Assembly to serve and not to acquire wealth for my personal use. “If elected, I will bring a brand new representation to the zone. I am going to the National Assembly to complete the good works which my town’s brother, late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, was doing before his unfortunate demise,” he said. He also promised to establish an empowerment model that would provide longer-term economic opportunities for constituents rather than what he described as short-term assistance during election periods. He said, “If elected, I will introduce an empowerment model that will sustain my constituents throughout the election cycle; not a situation where voters’ mandates and conscience will be purchased with stipends that will sustain them for one week or less.” Nwosu further pledged to ensure that each of the seven local government areas in the district had a signature project under his proposed representation. “If elected, every LGA in my Senatorial district will have my signature project, and will feel my presence. Whatever bill or motion is presented on the floor of the Senate will be such that will have direct impact on the daily lives and businesses of our people,” he added. He said the PDP would deploy its political structure to ensure that votes were counted at polling units across the district. Nwosu also urged voters to reject attempts by politicians to induce them with money or other material benefits ahead of the election. The candidate described the 2027 poll as different from previous elections, saying political influence and financial inducements should not determine the outcome. He said, “The 2027 Senatorial election in Anambra South is between myself, the PDP and the people of Anambra South. As a former organising secretary of the PDP in Anambra, it allows me to win as a grassroots mobiliser.” Nwosu also expressed confidence in his party’s grassroots structure, while dismissing the prospects of rival candidates. “APC, APGA and NDC candidates cannot be a threat to my aspiration. Apart from my closeness to the people at the grassroots, PDP remains the only political party whose structure has noticeable presence in every household in Nigeria. So, getting the mandate and defending it cannot be our problem,” he said. The PDP candidate also criticised the practice of lawmakers returning to their constituencies mainly during election periods to distribute food items and other temporary assistance. He said his proposed empowerment programme would instead seek to provide constituents with sustainable opportunities throughout the electoral cycle. Anambra South Senatorial District is one of the three senatorial districts in the state and comprises seven local government areas, including Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Aguata, Ihiala, Ekwusigo, Orumba North and Orumba South. The district has a large concentration of commercial and industrial activities, particularly around Nnewi, while agriculture, trade and small businesses remain important sources of livelihood across the area. Against this background, Nwosu said his proposed legislative agenda would focus on creating economic opportunities, supporting businesses and strengthening grassroots development across the district.
