Olumba asks Nigerians to shun tribalism, political gains - Punch Newspapers
The Spiritual Leader of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu, has warned Nigerian leaders against sacrificing the “enduring” interests of the nation for temporary political gains. He called on Nigerians to rise above tribalism, regionalism, religious division, political differences and selfish interest, stressing that the strength of Nigeria is not in one tribe, one region, one political party or one religion. “Let every Nigerian therefore rise above tribalism, regionalism, religious division, political differences and every form of selfish interest, and let us begin to see Nigeria not merely as a geographical territory, but as a nation carrying a responsibility of profound significance to creation,” Olumba said. Olumba, who is revered by adherents as the King of Kings and Lord of lords, gave the warning on Thursday in his divine message to Nigeria to mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary at the World Headquarters of the fold in Calabar, capital of Cross River State. He described leadership as a sacred responsibility, charging those in authority to use their positions to promote the welfare of the people.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google He said, “To the leaders of Nigeria, remember that leadership is a sacred responsibility. “Use the authority entrusted to you to promote the welfare of the people, protect the vulnerable, uphold justice and peace, and build institutions that will serve generations to come. “Do not sacrifice the enduring interests of the nation for temporary political interests.” Late PUNCH reporter Odey buried Democracy in the dock and the knives are out Opposition consensus candidate is late– SDP spokesman, Ayenigba The spiritual leader said Nigeria must not be understood only by the boundaries drawn upon a map, but through the divine responsibility and purpose that God has entrusted to her. He described Nigeria as a kingdom which shall not be left to other people, but shall “ultimately” be ruled by God Himself, and urged Nigerians not to place their entire hope in human systems. “Systems of government will surely change, administrations shall come and go, and political structures shall be transformed, but the divine will of God cannot be altered,” Olumba stated. He said Nigeria’s continued existence despite many difficult experiences was a testimony of God’s grace and mercy, noting that many situations capable of producing consequences beyond human control had been averted through divine intervention. He also addressed citizens and the youth, urging Nigerians to love and protect their country, exercise their freedoms responsibly and preserve the nation they hope to inherit. Speaking to the international community, he urged world powers not to underestimate Nigeria or judge her by her present difficulties. Emem Julius
