NPA to prosecute Mbalula and Malema for accusing Bergview principal of rape - EWN

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that it will prosecute African National (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula on a charge of crimen injuria.

This after Mbalula accused Bergview College Principal Jaco Pieterse of raping a child.

The matter came to light after an Eastern Cape mother alleged her daughter was raped at the school in 2024, either by the principal or the caretaker.

However, the NPA declined to prosecute the principal at the time, saying it could not find conclusive evidence that the child had been sexually assaulted.

Afriforum recently made submissions to Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions Andrew Chauke to consider prosecuting Mbalula.

Chauke responded to the lobby group on Monday and confirmed that the NPA will now move towards prosecuting the ANC politician.

NPA Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed this move.

"We, as the NDPP, were informed by the DPP in Gauteng South that they have made this decision and have communicated it to Afriforum."

 Head of Afriforum’s private prosecution unit, Gerrie Nel, welcomes the decision.

"This decision to prosecute must send out a strong message that one cannot say or post what they want. There will be consequences. We want to make it clear that no one is above the law.

EFF Leader Julius Malema will also be prosecuted on the same charge.
