National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is pressing ahead with lifestyle audits of Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) officials but said it was unclear whether former IDAC boss Andrea Johnson can still be subjected to the process after her resignation.

NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed the move while speaking to journalists at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, saying the audits would extend beyond IDAC to senior NPA management.

“We have indicated, when we had a press conference with the minister, that we are going to do a reset at IDAC, and one of the things that we are doing as part of the reset is lifestyle audits,” Kganyago said.

The audit will be conducted on prosecutors and investigators.

This comes after IDAC was accused of running a rogue element, conducting improper and politically influenced prosecutions and fabricating or altering evidence.

He said the exercise would cover IDAC prosecutors and investigators, as well as members of the NPA’s Management Committee and Executive Committee.

“We are going to have this lifestyle audit done on the prosecutors and the investigators at IDAC, together with the management at NPA itself, that is the MANCO and the EXCO,” he said.

Kganyago also confirmed that the NPA intends to review cases previously handled by IDAC.

The question of Johnson’s position emerged when journalists asked whether the lifestyle audit would apply to the former director, who resigned with immediate effect on July 27, 2026.

Kganyago said Johnson had already been included in the lifestyle audit of the NPA Executive Committee because she was an EXCO member when the process began.

“Therefore, unfortunately now there is a relationship between employer and employee that is no longer available, we cannot enforce that on her,” he said.

Johnson’s resignation followed intense scrutiny of IDAC’s handling of police crime-intelligence investigations before the Madlanga Commission.

At the commission, Johnson was questioned over allegations that she leaked a confidential criminal assault and intimidation docket to Major-General Feroz Khan, a Crime Intelligence boss facing corruption allegations. The commission heard that the alleged leak enabled Khan to prepare a warning statement.

Johnson invoked her constitutional right against self-incrimination when questioned about the alleged disclosure and declined to answer.

Text messages presented to the commission also showed an unusually personal exchange between Johnson and Khan, including affectionate terms, despite her earlier description of their relationship as professional.

Meanwhile, the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court formally dropped charges against suspended SAPS national commissioner Fannie Masemola.

IDAC had brought the charges under Johnson’s leadership.
