We live in an age where everything we do is apparently Insta-worthy, but if you're thinking of taking a selfie with your completed ballot paper on election day, think again!

The Electoral Commission (IEC) has reminded South Africans that photographing a completed ballot paper is actually illegal and could even land you in jail.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa on 702, IEC official Mmakgabo Ramatlhodi said snapping a pic of your ballot is a no-no.

Voters should keep their choices private, he said.

"It is still illegal for one to take a picture of a cast ballot... we don't want people to go to prison after voting."

He explained that taking a picture of a cast ballot is a breach of the electoral code of conduct.

"You could face prosecution if you do that."

But don't worry, you can still show off your civic pride. Ramatlhodi said voters can take selfies of their ink-marked thumbs instead.
