NGCP: Visayas grid under yellow alert on September 21, 2026 - GMA Network
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Monday placed the Visayas grid on yellow alert amid the unavailability of some coal plants and increase in forecasted demand.
In an advisory issued at 2:15 p.m., NGCP said the Visayas grid will be under yellow alert from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission gridβs contingency requirement.
The Visayas grid currently has an available capacity of 2,500 megawatts, despite having a peak demand of 2,426 MW.
The yellow alert declaration was due to the unavailability of the Visayas' large coal plants Therma Visayas, Inc. Unit 1 and Panay Energy Development Corp. Unit 3; tripping of PEDC 2 at 1:34 p.m. (Sept. 21); increase in forecasted demand in Visayas; and reduced power import from the Mindanao grid.
NGCP said 11 plants are on forced outage in September, three plants since August 2026, two plants since June, six plants since May, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while 17 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 859.8MW unavailable to the grid. βAOL, GMA News
