The New York Giants are placing wide receiver Braxton Berrios on injured reserve (IR) with a foot injury suffered in Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Berrios was listed as questionable with the foot injury in the second half of New York’s 36-24 victory at MetLife Stadium and was later ruled out. Charlie Jones handled the opening kickoff return of the second half and is the most immediate option to take over those duties alongside running Tyrone Tracy Jr.

The move ends a brief stay on the 53-man roster.

New York signed Berrios to a one-year deal in June to bolster the return game after Gunner Olszewski tore his ACL, released him on cutdown day, and brought him back to the practice squad. He was elevated for each of the first three games, the maximum allowed under league rules, before the Giants signed him to the active roster on September 29, the same day they released Odell Beckham Jr.

Through those first three weeks, Berrios had yet to record a reception. He played 22 snaps on offense and 21 on special teams, returning five kickoffs for 138 yards and two punts for 12 yards. He drew his first target of the season against Arizona before leaving the game.

A 2021 first-team All-Pro punt returner with the New York Jets, Berrios had been New York’s primary return option. His placement on IR opens a roster spot and shifts the return game to Tracy and Jones, who was promoted from the practice squad alongside him last week.
