New York Giants' Matt Nagy angry with himself over Week 2 play-calling - Giants Wire

Matt Nagy did not hide from Monday night’s red-zone failure. After the New York Giants stalled inside the 5-yard line, the offensive coordinator said he was “pissed at myself” for not calling a pass.

“That’s just being real, right?” Nagy told reporters on Wednesday. “How can I be better? How can I help our guys out? That third down play, those are the ones when you’re on the plane coming home that you’re pissed off about.”

The same self-critique covered personnel. Fullback Patrick Ricard’s snaps dropped even as protection problems appeared.

“He needs to play more. He’s a great weapon for us,” Nagy said. “Sometimes when you get into these games, whether it’s a certain package that you have, none of it’s intentional. Some of it just kind of happens.”

Cam Skattebo’s limited work near the goal line drew the same admission.

“It’s the same thing, too, with Skatt down inside in the red zone there with carrying the football and stuff. There’s a lot going on, and we definitely need to be better at making sure that guys are getting the right opportunities at certain times.”

Those missed chances land in a new context. Jaxson Dart’s injury after seven snaps removed the dual-threat piece that had shaped much of the early plan. Nagy said the staff built the offense to handle more than one quarterback style, so a sudden change would not put the team “in a hole.”

Dart’s mobility is “part of the playbook,” he said, and “there’s a part of the playbook that we do lose any way you look at it.”

With a full week now available, the Giants can “design around Jameis’ strengths and what he does.”

Nagy returned to the stop inside the five as the play he wants back. Ricard’s unused value, Skattebo’s unused carries, and a pass that never came sit in one conversation. The coordinator’s standard was simple: Help the players by putting them in the right spots at the right times.
