NCERT Class 9 Social Science adds new chapter, shifts World section to Class 10
The Grade 9 Social Science textbook Understanding Society: India and Beyond has undergone changes to its syllabus and chapter structure, with a new chapter on resistance and resilience added to the revised Part 2, as per exclusive information by India Today.
As part of the restructuring, the chapter ‘India and the World Part 1’, which was originally planned for Grade 9, has now been moved to Class 10. According to the textbook’s introductory note, it will be taught alongside other related themes with similar learning outcomes.
The changes have been made to make the curriculum more coherent and age-appropriate, while keeping students’ learning needs in focus.A NEW CHAPTER ON RESISTANCE
The revised Part 2 introduces the third chapter, ‘Resistance and Resilience (1000–1700 CE)’. It looks at how Indian rulers and communities responded to invasions and territorial expansion during the period.
The opening section, ‘Safeguarding Sovereignty: Resistance, Alliance and Confederacies’, examines how regional powers protected their territories and political autonomy through warfare, alliances, diplomacy and cooperation.
The chapter covers invasions by Arab and Turkish forces and the resistance offered by kingdoms in different parts of India, including the Deccan, Malwa, Kashmir and Rajasthan.
It also discusses regional rulers who resisted Turkish invasions. One example cited in the chapter is the 1178 defeat of Muhammad Ghuri by Queen Naiki Devi of the Chalukya kingdom near Mount Abu.
The restructuring is not limited to the history portion. The revised Part 2 also introduces ‘Governance and Public Policy’ in place of the previously planned chapter titled ‘Authority’.
The textbook’s introductory note says the changes in chapter placement and content are intended to make learning more meaningful and accessible for students.WHY THE CHAPTERS HAVE BEEN SHIFTED
The revised content has been organised around students’ age, interests and learning needs, according to the introductory note.
The stated aim is to make Social Science more engaging while avoiding concepts that may be difficult for students to understand at this stage.
