The first snowcap of the season was observed on Mount Fuji in central Japan on Friday morning.

Weather data showed that at least 1 centimeter of snow had accumulated around the summit.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says officials at the Kofu Local Meteorological Office had previously confirmed the first snowcap on Mount Fuji through visual observations. But starting this season, the agency has switched to a new method that analyzes weather data to determine snow accumulation.

This means a direct comparison with last year is not possible. But this year's first snowcap was recorded seven days later than in 2025.

Officials at the Kofu observatory say rain clouds started to cover the area around Mount Fuji before dawn on Friday, causing temperatures around the summit to drop.
