Mpumalanga police probe suspected illegal mining turf war after two bodies found
Police in Mpumalanga are investigating the discovery of two bodies in the Mashobote area near Schoemanskloof, as concerns grow over violence linked to illegal mining activities.
The latest victim, a man believed to be a foreign national, was found alongside the N4 on Thursday morning with multiple gunshot wounds.
Police also recovered rifle and pistol cartridges at the scene, while an AK-47 magazine and live ammunition were seized in the same area on Wednesday.
Officers say the killings may be linked to an ongoing turf war between rival groups of illegal miners, although investigations are continuing.
The latest discovery follows reports of a shooting involving suspected Zama-Zamas in the area on Tuesday, with blood stains found at the scene.
Police Spokesperson Donald Mdhluli said: "With the discovery of the body, police cannot rule out the possibility that the deceased could be linked to the alleged illegal mining activities and the reported shooting incident which was reported. However, this will form part of the ongoing investigation by the police. "
