Sivarathri Rajendra Swami transformed the traditional role of the Suttur Mutt into a powerful movement for social change through education, healthcare and public service, said noted scholar D.S. Sadashiva Murthy.
Speaking at the 111th Jayanthi Mahotsava of the Jagadguru at the JSS Technical Institutions campus here, Prof. Murthy said the Seer’s contributions assumed greater significance considering the widespread poverty, hunger and illiteracy prevalent during the pre- and post-Independence periods.
Recognising education and food security as vital tools to combat poverty, the Seer established free hostels for talented students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds. “These initiatives helped transform the lives of thousands of families,” he said.
Prof. Murthy, in his speech, said the Seer extended educational and residential facilities to students irrespective of caste or religion, reflecting Basavanna’s ideals of equality and social justice.
Presiding over the programme, JSS Science and Technology University Vice-Chancellor A.N. Santosh Kumar said the Swami’s legacy continued to inspire generations through education, healthcare and social service. Education, he said, was viewed by the Seer not as a privilege, but as a fundamental necessity for freedom and democracy.
His philosophy of Trividha Dasoha—Anna Dasoha, Jnana Dasoha and Arogya Dasoha—provided a comprehensive approach to social transformation. “Serving the hungry, educating the poor, healing the sick and empowering the disadvantaged was spirituality for him,” Prof. Kumar said.
He said the seer’s vision led to the establishment of schools, colleges, hospitals and technical and medical institutions, turning the Suttur Mutt into a major centre of education and social welfare. He urged people to uphold the values of inclusivity, integrity, humility, service and social harmony.
As part of the Jayanthi celebrations, high-performing students from across the JSS Technical Institutions were felicitated with endowment awards instituted through the generous contributions of donors. The awards recognised academic excellence and encouraged students to continue their pursuit of knowledge and professional excellence.
Also, students from JSS PDA were provided with wheelchairs on the occasion.
Sharathchandra Swami of Kunduru Mutt, who graced the occasion, said true sainthood was defined not by religious attire or rituals but by compassion and selfless service.
