Melania’s office gives credential to CNN for NYC event despite her husband’s ban on the outlet

Days after President Donald Trump banned CNN from the White House, First Lady Melania Trump’s office approved a request from the outlet to cover an upcoming event with her in New York City.

On Monday, CNN chief media analyst Brian Stelter was discussing the president’s ban — which bars reporters from CNN, Politico and MS NOW from the White House — when he revealed the apparent workaround.

“We’re going to see reporters get creative,” Stelter said. “That’s what we do sometimes when we have to. We’re going to see reporters try and get credentialed in other ways.”

“I’m told, for example, a CNN reporter has already been approved by the office of the first lady to cover an event with Melania Trump on the sidelines of the U.N. tomorrow,” he said. “So I’m expecting more of those sorts of things to happen.”

When reached by The Independent, an official from the first lady’s office confirmed that the office approved a credential request by CNN reporter Betsy Klein to cover Melania Trump’s “Fostering the Future Together” announcement in New York City on Tuesday.

The “Fostering the Future Together” event, set to take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, will tout private sector partnerships with tech companies, according to USA Today.

Betsy Klein is a senior White House reporter for CNN. Last week, she reported that Secret Service agents seized her press pass at a White House checkpoint following Trump’s media ban.

The 80-year-old president abruptly unveiled the ban on Friday, citing “FAKE NEWS” from CNN, MS NOW and Politico.

“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” the president wrote on Truth Social.

The three outlets subsequently filed a lawsuit against Trump and several of his top advisers, arguing the restriction on their access amounts to a “direct assault on the First Amendment.”

On Monday, the judge assigned to the case said the Trump administration has until Tuesday to respond to the lawsuit.

Also on Monday, the White House television pool announced it will suspend its coverage of Trump.

“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government,” the pool, composed of five television networks, said in a statement. “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”
