Matthew McConaughey rips 'Brothers' costar Woody Harrelson for Emmy stage mishap - USA Today
Matthew McConaughey has a new favorite thing to rip his “Brothers” costar Woody Harrelson about: the duo’s Sept. 14 Emmy stage performance on live TV.
McConaughey, 56, and Harrelson, 65, stars of the new Apple TV series “Brothers” (first two episodes now streaming), presented the outstanding comedy series award together at the 78th Emmy Awards on Sept. 14. After announcing “Widow’s Bay” as the winner of the night’s final award, McConaughey gallantly stepped out of the way, ceding the stage to the crowd of approaching stars and producers.
Harrelson never got the proper presenting memo. The Oscar-nominated star remained onstage next to double-Emmy-winner Matthew Rhys and the "Widow's Bay" crew. During producer Katie Dippold's acceptance speech, Harrelson is clearly caught onstage. It's priceless. Just ask the mocking McConaughey.
"Did you see him win his second Emmy for 'Widow's Bay'?" McConaughey asks USA TODAY during a joint interview for "Brothers," as Harrelson groans. "I hand the trophy, and I remove myself. And you see the whole 'Widow's Bay' producing crew and Matthew Rhys and everything. And there was one other guy there, though, right behind the person talking on the mic. He's taking in the adulation."
McConaughey motions to Harrelson, adding, "And he looked a whole lot like this guy, but he had a red shirt on."
"I was basically congratulating Matthew [Rhys] and the producers," he says. "And then I noticed, 'Oh, I'm kind of back here with these guys.'"
By the time Harrelson realized he shouldn't be that close, it was too late. "And now it would have been awkward just to walk away," he says. "So I just kind of embraced it."
"There's the genius of Woody Harrelson right there," McConaughey says.
And there’s the genius – or perhaps the joyously watchable stupidity – of the duo playing larger-than-life versions of their Texas selves in the fall Apple TV series "Brothers." The story is built around the very real, very strange rumor that the longtime friends might actually be biological brothers. They definitely have the same sense of humor.
