Police have arrested two teenagers after a man was allegedly stabbed while trying to stop a group of boys from breaking into a car in Melbourne's south-east early this morning.

The 41-year-old is fighting for life in hospital after being stabbed outside his home in Govan Street in Langwarrin at 12:20am, police say.

Police allege he was critically injured when he confronted the group.

Ambulance Victoria said Mobile Intensive Care and Advanced Life Support paramedics were called to the incident.

The spokesperson said the man was taken to the Alfred Hospital with wounds to the upper body.

The offenders fled before police arrived at the Langwarrin house. (ABC News)

Two 16-year-old boys were arrested about 4am.

They are yet to be questioned about the stabbing.

Police are still searching for a third teenager.

A resident of Langwarrin said one of the boys was arrested after being captured on his CCTV cameras in his backyard.

He said the boy made his way out of his property through a front gate.

Other neighbours described the street as family-friendly and close-knit.

"Normally there's kids playing on the street, everyone's out having a beer," one said. "It's just a weird feeling."

"There were four cop cars, three ambulances. We were just a bit shocked," another said.

"We've walked around here since we were kids … you just wouldn't think twice."
