Miami will be without a key member of its offense for its marquee road trip to Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 7 − and perhaps for a good while longer.

Hurricanes star wide receiver Malachi Toney is dealing with an injured ankle that is expected to keep him out for an "extended period of time," USA TODAY Sports' John Brice has confirmed. Toney will miss Saturday's game against the Fighting Irish as he is set to undergo a medical procedure, with a return that could come in the College Football Playoff.

"He'll try to play, but he got banged up pretty good today at practice. Lower leg," a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

Miami released a statement late Wednesday afternoon confirming that Toney, who has established himself as a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender this season, sustained an injury in Wednesday's practice.

"Malachi Toney sustained an injury during Wednesday's practice and is currently undergoing further evaluation by the team's medical staff. We will share additional updates as appropriate," the statement read.

The ACC confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that since Saturday's game is a non-conference matchup for Miami, as Notre Dame competes as a football independent despite being an ACC member in other sports, the Hurricanes will not be required to submit a player availability report to the ACC on Wednesday, unlike conference teams playing in Week 10.

Through nine weeks this season, Toney has hauled in 73 receptions for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns. His 1,027 receiving yards rank third nationally, while his 13 touchdown catches are tied for the second most in the country, trailing only Oregon State's Jesse Legree. Toney has been on a tear in the last three weeks, totaling 34 receptions for 433 yards and seven touchdowns.

He heads into Week 10 vs. Notre Dame ranked No. 3 in Austin Curtright's USA TODAY Sports Heisman Trophy Power Rankings. The Hurricanes, who were tabbed as the No. 1 seed in the first unveiling of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, and the Fighting Irish are set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday.
