Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Shakes Bayah, Banten; BPBD Lebak: No Tsunami Potential

LEBAK, KOMPAS.com - A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the Bayah waters, Lebak Regency, Banten, on Friday night (18/9/2026).

According to data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) website, the earthquake's epicenter was located 198 kilometers southwest of Bayah, in the Indian Ocean waters. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

BMKG stated that the earthquake does not have tsunami potential.

The Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lebak Regency, Sukanta, said that as of Friday night, there have been no reports of damage or impacts caused by the earthquake.

"There are no reports of damage from volunteers on the ground," Sukanta told Kompas.com via WhatsApp on Friday.

This earthquake in Bayah is the second to occur within one week. Due to this, Sukanta urged residents to remain vigilant.

"We, the Lebak Regency Government through BPBD Lebak, continue to remind and urge the public to increase their awareness in facing potential disasters," Sukanta said on Friday night.

He explained that Lebak Regency is an area prone to various types of disasters.

"Because Lebak Regency is essentially a disaster supermarket," he said.

Sukanta asked the community to recognize their environment and understand natural signs as part of disaster mitigation efforts.

The public is also encouraged to keep updating information from relevant authorities to avoid panic during disasters.

"So that when a disaster occurs, people remain calm, know evacuation routes, what to bring, and so on," he added.

Sukanta reminded residents to stay calm and follow official information from the government or related agencies if aftershocks or other disasters occur.
