Lamola raises concern over 'unilateral' US visa restrictions on SA - EWN

On Wednesday, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola noted with concern the "unilateral" new visa restrictions on South Africa announced by the United States (US).

Lamola also urged respect for democracy and the country's sovereignty following the latest US statements on domestic policy and claims of Afrikaner persecution.

Lamola's US counterpart, Marco Rubio, on Tuesday night announced the new policy would target "foreign nationals involved in race-based discrimination and incitement of imminent violence", including their family members.

International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said South Africa respects that the United States may hold different views regarding particular measures and their implementation.

"However, we remain committed to addressing these challenges through our constitutional institutions, democratic processes and the rule of law with the objective of building a more equal and inclusive society for all South Africans," Phiri said.
