The Kerala High Court has reserved its verdict on lawyer T.B. Mini’s petition seeking contempt of court proceedings against District Judge Honey M. Varghese for the alleged adverse remarks in a case related to the 2017 actor assault case.
Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan orally enquired whether the judge’s remarks were recorded as part of the case, and how he could expunge a statement that was not on record.
According to the petitioner, Ms. Varghese orally remarked that Ms. Mini had only appeared in court for 10 days during the trial; on the days of appearance, she would only attend court for half an hour, and that for half that time, she would be nodding off in court, treating it as a resting place. She contended that there were eyewitnesses to the incident.
Media platforms had aired the remarks within seconds after they were uttered, Ms. Mini said. She cited several comments left by the public on social media platforms, relating to her conduct and character as a lawyer. The judge’s unwarranted remarks were amplified by the media and caused her hardships, Ms. Mini claimed.
